The Heart of the World The Heart of the World

In 2002 the sculptress Anna Chromy produced the piece of art, "Il cuore del mondo", in honour of Pope John Paul II's 82nd birthday. The first piece of jewellery in the "OperaSacra®" range was modelled on this sculpture.
The "Fondazione Chromy" was founded by Anna Chromy herself and by other people close to her.

Anna Chromy's Heart of the World

This heart was created in 2001 and I was able to offer it with immense joy to Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square during the audience for his 82th birthday.
On that unforgettable occasion, the Holy Father said to me in perfect German "It's the most beautiful gift for my birthday and I shall keep it with me in my apartment". An official letter confirming this fact was sent me by the State Secretary of the Holy Seat.
The theme of this work is to be found in Prophet Ezekiel's words "Cast away your heart of stone and I shall give you a new heart of flesh". These words are the heart of the Pope's message: "Selfishness makes us deaf and dumb; only love opens our eyes and heart and gives us peace".
When Pope Woytila's heart stopped beating at 9.37 p.m. on the 2nd April, the very
Heart of the World seemed to stop.
This is the title given to my work by the Archbishop of Salzburg.
Even in life, John Paul II was a symbol of Peace, of Love and of Mercy, living hope for young people throughout the world, a European and universal myth.
His contribution to the democratic unification of Europe is invaluable and it's evident proof that Europe is still capable to create icons of universal value.
